How to Set Up Your Funnel

A funnel is a set of steps representing the journey you expect users to take towards a goal (e.g., viewing a product, adding to cart, then paying). You can define these steps at any time — Insightech will pull historical data into your report as long as you have data in the platform.

How to Set Up a Funnel

Step 1: Navigate to the 'New Funnel' Page
  1. Click 'Funnels' on the left hand menu
  2. Click the '+Add New Funnel' button

You should now see the 'New Funnel' page to input all of your funnel details.

Step 2: Set Up Your Funnel Name and Settings
  1. Enter a name for your funnel
  2. (Optional): Select a folder, create a new folder, or leave your funnel in the general folder.
  3. Choose a Closed Funnel (users must complete each step in order) or an Open Funnel (steps can be completed in any order).
Closed Funnels (recommended) count users at a step if they also completed all the steps before it. For example, a user only shows up at a checkout step, if they also visit the Product Page and Add the Item to Cart. Use this when wanting to measure the likelihood (%) of users progressing through your funnel flow.

Open Funnels count ALL users at each step even if they skipped earlier steps. If someone lands directly on a checkout page, and skips the product page, they will show up in the checkout step. Use this when looking at the total traffic volume at each step.
Step 3: Add your Funnel Steps

Each step should represent a meaningful user action. For example, a typical first step might be “Visit product page.” In the step panel:

  1. Name the step – describe the action clearly.
  2. Select an event type – click the Choose an event dropdown and pick from categories such as:
    • Pages Visited (Visited, Entry Page, Exit Page, Content Element Loaded)
    • On‑Page Engagement (Clicked, Page Scrolled)
    • Form/Field Events (Field Value Changed, Field Submitted)
    • Goals (Conversion)
  3. Define the condition – after choosing an event, select a condition such as Page URL or Page Path, choose an operator (is, contains, starts with, etc.), and enter the value (e.g., /product).
  4. (Optional) Add more events to the same step – click Add Event and select another event. You can connect conditions with AND or OR operators to refine the step further.
Step 3: Add additional steps
  1. Click Add New Step to create the next stage in your funnel. Repeat the process:
    • Give the step a descriptive name.
    • Choose the relevant event type and condition(s).
    • Add extra events if needed.
Use the up/down arrows to reorder steps or the X icon to remove a step. Continue adding steps until you’ve defined the entire journey, ending with the final goal (e.g., “Order confirmation”).
Step 4: Save and finish

Once all steps are configured:

  1. Click Save Changes to create the funnel.
  2. Click Done to exit the Funnel Builder. Your new funnel appears in the Funnel List.

You can return to the Funnel Builder at any time to edit step names, conditions or the folder. Insightech automatically updates the funnel report with historical data and new sessions when you make changes.

Organise and Manage Funnels

Funnels can be organised into folders to keep related analyses together. Use the Folder dropdown in the Funnel Builder to assign a funnel to an existing folder or create a new one.

Folders appear as tabs on the Funnel List page—click any folder tab to view its funnels.

Funnels can also be organised into folders for quick access that your whole team can access.

For step‑by‑step instructions on creating and managing folders, see our Funnel Folders article.
